About
The Medical University Sofia is the oldest Bulgarian university for medicine. It was founded by the Bulgarian King Ferdinant. The medical faculty of the Medical University Sofia exists since 1871. With it started the establishment of an already hundred years tradition in the field of medical education and science. Later the faculty separates from the Sofia University and becomes an independent institution.
Many of the university lecturers are well acknowledged amongst the European education institutions. A dental and a pharmacy faculties were created with time, and later with the support of the European Union and the World Health Organization, the faculty of public health is created. Except it’s four faculties, the Medical University has a department and three colleges. Later 14 university hospitals join the medical venture. This allows you to imagine the big scale of this medical university. Because of those facts, the university became one of the biggest and most authoritative medical, educational and scientific institutions within the Bulgarian and the European medical and scientific areas.
Since its foundation until now, the Medical University trained more than 60 000 specialists, from which 4600 are foreign citizens. Within the university work 1969 teachers and research associates, nearly 4000 students, from which 800 foreign, 121 PhD students, 2237 post-graduate students, 23 clinical counselors.
Education
The Medical University Sofia participates actively in international programs and projects in Europe. The educational programs are compliant with the requirements of the European Society, which is the main reason that makes possible so many successful students and teachers to transfer for the Erasmus programs. In connection with this, the university was included in the European Credits Transfer System (ECTS) as well as the quality control system (QCS).
The specialties Medicine and Stomatology are fully in English. The education includes 10 academic semesters (6 years with internship) and is divided into two main parts: Preclinical (2 years) and Clinical (3 years). Internship for a year is required in order to graduate. During the second and the third year a mandatory practice is held.
The standards for quality of education and scientific activities are agreed with the requirements of the European Union. The assessment is based on the European Credit Transfer System. After graduating the full course of education and successful passing of the State Exams, the graduates acquire professional qualification “Master-Doctor” as well as an educational qualification “Master” with which they can practice their specialty within or outside of Europe.
