Studing medicine or dental medicine at the Medical University Plovdiv
The Medical University in Plovdiv is a modern university in the center of Bulgaria. It is thriv-ing with extremely good reputation in Bulgaria as well as in the whole world. The university was founded in 1945 as a faculty of the Plovdiv University. Later in 1950 it separated itself as an independent university. In 1974 a faculty for stomatology was created.
The Medical University in Plovdiv includes 6 core faculties: Medical, Dental, Pharmaceutical, Public Health faculty, department for specialized education in a foreign language and a Medical college. Yearly, over 4 000 PhD and foreign students are trained by 700 highly qualified lecturers. Foreigh students from more than 50 countries had chosen this university for their professional training.
The Medical University in Plovdiv is a member of the European University Association. Many agreements for cooperation were signed with 75 universities in Europe, USA and Asia. The lecturers and research associates of the university are actively involved in organizing the education process as well as in serious scientific and related public activities. Around 1260 publications are made by the research associates of the university for the period 2010 – 2013. 355 of them are full-text articles or reports published in foreign editions and publications with an impact factor are over 100. In the Medical University in Plovdiv, the reputable medical magazine „Folia Medica“ which is distributed in 54 countries, is being published. Another interesting fact is that the university holds a yearly competition for scientific projects and projects of students, PhD students and young scientists from Bulgaria and abroad „SCIENCE AND YOUTH”, which is co-organized with the Youth Scientific Association and boasts a strong international presence.
The medical specialty is fully in English. The education includes 10 academic semesters (6 years with internship) and is divided into 2 main courses: Preclinical (2 years) and Clinical (3 years). Internship for a year is required in order to graduate. During the second and the third year a mandatory practice is held. All successfully graduated students receive educational qualification “Master” and professional qualification “Doctor”.
The standards for quality of education and scientific activities are agreed with the require-ments of the European Union. The assessment is based on the European Credit Transfer System.
The medical program takes place in the medical faculty of the university. At the moment 1800 students in the medicine field are being trained. The education program can be either in Eng-lish or in Bulgarian. Arround 800 foreign students are citizens of 27 countries from 5 continents, including – from Great Britain, Greece, turkey, Italy, Germany, USA, China,Sweeden, Netherland, Norway, New Zeland and many more.
The structure of the Medical faculty consists of 27 departments. The students can choose between more than 30 disciplines in order to fill their credits from first until the sixth semester. More than 15 workshops function in the faculty, which allow the students to enrich their knowledge outside of the educational program.
The research activities of the medical faculty are aiming at integration of new methods and innovational technologies in the field of endoscopic surgery and microsurgery, advanced diagnostics, nuclear medicine and radiotherapy, prevention, diagnosis and therapy of oncologi-cal, cardiovascular and neurological conditions, creation and implementation of new methods and technologies in medical practice.
The educational program for the specialty “Dental medicine” continues 5 years and a half (10 semesters preclinical and clinical training and 9 months internship). The education program is carried out according to the contemporary requirements, combining medical and special dental disciplines. Phantom training in preclinical and patient care in clinical disciplines allows effective practical training in dental students' self-care. Those who have successfully passed the state examinations receive a Master's degree and a professional qualification Dentist in Dentistry.
The faculty for Dental medicine has in its dispose perfect equipment and renovated lecturing, phantom, preclinical and clinical halls.
